Background of the Study
Mental health is a crucial yet often neglected aspect of public healthcare in many developing countries, including Nigeria. Despite the increasing prevalence of mental health disorders such as depression, anxiety, and schizophrenia, access to quality mental healthcare remains limited. The Nigerian government has made efforts to improve mental healthcare through policies that integrate mental health services into primary healthcare systems. However, the implementation of these policies remains inconsistent across different states.
Niger State, like many other states in Nigeria, faces significant challenges in mental health service delivery. Public hospitals often lack the necessary infrastructure, trained personnel, and medications to provide adequate mental health support. Furthermore, social stigma and limited government funding contribute to poor mental health policy implementation. This study aims to examine how mental health policies are implemented in public hospitals in Niger State, identifying gaps and recommending strategies for improvement.
Statement of the Problem
Despite the existence of mental health policies, access to quality mental health services in Niger State remains inadequate. Public hospitals face shortages of mental health professionals, insufficient funding, and a lack of specialized treatment facilities. Additionally, poor policy implementation results in fragmented mental healthcare services, leaving many individuals without necessary support.
This study seeks to examine the effectiveness of mental health policy implementation in public hospitals in Niger State, identifying challenges and proposing solutions for better service delivery.
